Making Movie, Clay Doll Photo “Monkey Wine in Takasaki Mountain

A new work of Nendo doll photography, the Oita City folktale “Monkey Wine on Takasaki Mountain” – an introduction to the four production processes of “location scouting,” “storyboarding,” “doll making,” and “test shooting.

ねんど人形写真の新作、大分市の民話「高崎山の猿酒」～「ロケハン」「絵コンテ」「人形制作」「テスト撮影」の4つの制作工程をご紹介します。

I made an English version of the making-of video for the clay doll picture “Monkey Wine in Takasaki Mountain.

I’m not very good at English myself, so I’m trying to learn that as well.

ねんど人形写真「高崎山のサル酒」メイキング動画の、英語バージョンを作ってみました。

私自身も英語は不得手なので、その勉強を兼ねています。

I’m location-hunting for a photo background for the Oita Folktale “Monkey Wine on Takasaki Mountain” story.

大分の昔ばなし「高崎山のサル酒」物語の写真用背景をロケハンしています。

Monkey Mountain on the far side. Mt. Takasaki.

奥側が猿の山「高崎山」。

The picture is created based on the actual place where the old tale was handed down.

昔ばなしの実際の伝承地を取材・想定して絵作りします。

I’d like to put a doll around here with this background.

この背景でこの辺りに人形を置きたい。

In that case, I’d like to have a little more space on the bottom side where I can place the dolls more comfortably.

その場合、下側にもう少し人形を楽に配置出来るスペースが欲しい。

Once I have an image, start making the doll.

イメージが出来たら、人形制作開始。

The merchant who sells alcohol in the story is also created at the same time.

物語に登場の酒売りの商人も同時に作ります。

Three figures will be produced at the same time in about two weeks.

三体同時進行で、２週間ほどで制作します。

Watching how the clay dries, I carefully consider the proportions of the doll.

粘土の乾き具合を観ながら、人形のプロポーションをじっくり検討。

Parts of the ankle.The groove on the top of the foot is for the nose cord of the zori.

足首のパーツ。足の甲の溝は草履の鼻緒用。

For character design and balance, I refer to my past works.

キャラクターデザインやバランスは、自分の過去作を参考にします。

この酒売りの商人さんの頭巾は・・・

… removable with his chonmage head.

・・・ちょんまげ頭のまま取り外し可能にしています。

A monkey whose leg was caught in a crab.To express the damage. I put a band-aid on it.

カニに足を挟まれたサル。ダメージ表現のためバンソウコウをつけました。

Even a crab can make a pretty calm expression.

カニでも結構おっとりとした表情を作れるものですね。

Testing on location.The real shooting is scheduled for the next fresh green season.

ロケのテスト。本番の撮影は次の新緑の季節の予定です。

この背景は工夫すると面白くなりそう。

This background can be interesting if I get creative.

Creating a picture in a small area is easier with less information.

小さい範囲での絵作りは情報量が少なくて楽ちん。

I used driftwood that I found on the spot as a background.

その場にあった流木を、背景に利用。

I’m looking forward to spring.

春が楽しみです。
